The allowable deviation from a stated dimension, level, or finish. Tolerances define the line between acceptable workmanship and a defect.

Example: a wall is plumb to within 4mm over 2400mm per the HIA Guide. 5mm out is a defect; 3mm out is acceptable. Without a stated tolerance, PCI disputes get subjective and ugly.

Australian residential tolerances live in the HIA Guide to Materials and Workmanship plus the relevant state workmanship guide (VBA, NSW Fair Trading, QBCC, CBS, BSA WA). For specific finishes, AS standards apply (e.g. AS 2589 Levels 1 to 5 for plasterboard).

Also known as: Acceptance limit, allowable deviation.
