Background

Dan Waring is a qualified carpenter and business graduate, and the co-founder of British Log Cabins, a UK building company he ran for several years before relocating to Australia. The trade side is hands-on: years on the tools, then years running the books, the subbies, the certifiers, and the client relationships that make a small builder either profitable or broke.

In parallel, Dan has built deep applied-AI expertise. He ships production AI tooling that other founders pay him to design and run: Cowork plugins, Claude skills, MCP servers, automated content pipelines, agent orchestration. The combination is unusual in Australian construction. Most builders cannot code; most AI builders have never read a building contract. Chalkline is what happens when both stacks land in one person.

The editorial perspective across the Chalkline wiki is a builder-operator's, not a journalist's or a marketer's. Every article is written by someone who has been responsible for the variations, the defects, the AS callouts on drawings, and the conversations with the council. Why Chalkline

The moat behind Chalkline is not code. It is currency, AU-specificity, and depth. NCC and AS standards update regularly, state regs vary, HIA and MBA contract versions change, and prices move. Generic AI tools will not bother building and maintaining an AU-specific reference at this level of detail. Chalkline exists because Dan uses the product himself every week and the wiki gets sharper as a result.
