The Housing Industry Association’s national reference for acceptable materials and workmanship in Australian residential building. Sets out benchmarks for assessing whether something is a defect, by referencing the NCC, applicable Australian Standards, and industry practice.

Used at PCI as the workmanship arbiter where contracts call it out, and routinely in defect disputes.

Distinct from each state’s Guide to Standards and Tolerances (VBA in VIC, NSW Fair Trading in NSW, QBCC in QLD, etc.), which are state-issued workmanship references with similar purposes. Most contracts cite one or the other; some cite both.

The HIA Guide is published behind member access. Builders should reference it by name in contracts, not paraphrase it.

Also known as: HIA Guide, HIA Materials and Workmanship Guide.
