XPS (extruded polystyrene)

Extruded polystyrene (XPS): denser and more moisture-resistant than EPS, used in cornice profiles and under-slab insulation in Australian construction.

Ask Chalkline about this →

XPS (extruded polystyrene) is a rigid foam board made by extruding melted polystyrene through a die, producing a closed-cell structure denser than EPS. The closed-cell structure gives XPS better compressive strength and moisture resistance than EPS, making it suitable for use in higher-humidity environments such as bathrooms and kitchens. In residential construction it appears as cornice and coving profiles, under-slab insulation, and floor insulation.

Like EPS, XPS is combustible and must not be used inside fire-resistance-level (FRL) tested assemblies without confirmation that it is outside the tested system. Cutting XPS generates fine dust; wear a P2 mask. Do not cut with a grinder or abrasive disc.

Also known as: extruded polystyrene, high-density polystyrene foam.
