EPS (expanded polystyrene)

Expanded polystyrene (EPS): lightweight foam used in cornice, insulation panels, and formwork in Australian residential construction.

EPS (expanded polystyrene) is a lightweight, rigid foam made from beads of polystyrene that are expanded with steam and fused together. In residential construction it appears as cornice and coving profiles, insulation boards, waffle-pod void formers, and EPS cavity fill systems. It is inexpensive and easy to cut with a fine-tooth saw or heated wire.

EPS is combustible. It softens and melts under heat, and unrated EPS used in external wall assemblies is a fire risk. In Australian residential (Class 1) buildings, EPS is generally acceptable for small internal trim such as cornice, but must not be incorporated into fire-resistance-level (FRL) tested wall or ceiling systems without confirming it is outside the tested assembly.

Also known as: expanded polystyrene, polystyrene foam, polystyrene cornice.

Category: Materials, insulation and trim.
