WERS (Window Energy Rating Scheme)

WERS is Australia's Window Energy Rating Scheme. It rates windows for thermal performance used in NatHERS 7-star energy modelling under NCC 2022.

WERS (Window Energy Rating Scheme) is the Australian industry scheme that provides standardised energy performance ratings for window and glazed door products. Each product is rated for its U-value (thermal transmittance, heat flow in or out) and SHGC (solar heat gain coefficient, how much solar heat passes through), both of which are used as inputs to NatHERS software when energy modelling a home to the 7-star requirement under NCC 2022.

The WERS rating is generated by combining physical product testing with computer simulation using NatHERS-accredited software. Products are rated for heating-dominated and cooling-dominated climates separately. A window with a low U-value reduces heat loss in winter; a low SHGC reduces unwanted solar gain in summer. Which matters more depends on climate zone.

WERS ratings are managed by the Australian Glass and Window Association (AGWA). To use a product in an NCC-compliant NatHERS model, the product’s WERS data must be in the WERS database or otherwise acceptable to the energy assessor.
