Waling plate

A waling plate (also called a ledger board) is the horizontal timber or steel member fixed to the external wall of a building to support the ends of deck joists. It transfers deck loads into the wall framing or masonry.

NCC 2022 Housing Provisions Part 12.3 specifies minimum waling plate sizes: 90 x 35 mm (F5 or MGP10) for timber frame walls, fixed with No. 14 partial-threaded self-drilling screws at maximum 450 mm centres; 140 x 35 mm for masonry walls, anchored with M12 chemical or mechanical anchors at maximum 300 mm staggered centres. Flashing over the waling plate is required to prevent water entry at the wall junction.
