A Type 17 screw is a timber fixing screw with an augur-cut (notched) thread point that cuts a kerf in wood fibres for fast penetration without pre-drilling. The designation “Type 17” refers to the point form as defined in AS 3566.1-2002, distinguishing it from the self-drilling Tek point (used for steel) and standard wood-screw points. Most bugle-head and hex-head timber screws sold in Australia for framing, batten, and decking applications are Type 17.

The Type 17 point is not designed for steel. Forcing a Type 17 into sheet metal will cause the tip to skate, overheat, or snap the screw. For metal-to-metal or metal-to-timber fixing, use a Tek point screw.

Also known as: augur-point screw, batten screw (when used in roofing batten applications), framing screw.

Category: Fixings and fasteners.

Standard: AS 3566.1-2002 (R2015) (verified 2026-05-10, Standards Australia Store).
