H2 treated timber is structural timber treated with preservative to Hazard Level 2, providing protection against termite attack in above-ground, enclosed situations where the timber will not be exposed to wetting or weather. H2 is the minimum treatment level specified under AS 3660.1:2014 Appendix D for framing members in buildings in declared termite-prone areas where the framing itself is part of the termite management strategy.
H2 treatment protects against termite attack but does not protect against fungal decay. Timber that may be exposed to moisture (ground contact, subfloor, external or semi-exposed) requires H3, H4, or H5 treatment depending on exposure. In most residential framing practice, H2 pine is specified where a physical or chemical termite barrier is the primary protection method and the framing is a secondary line of defence.
