Turf is pre-grown grass supplied in rolls or slabs, harvested from a turf farm, and laid by a landscaper on prepared ground. Common species for Australian residential projects include Sir Walter buffalo, couch, kikuyu, zoysia, and fescue mixes, selected for climate, sun exposure, and maintenance requirements.

Turf laying is soft landscaping, not structural landscaping, so it does not require a contractor licence in NSW or a builder registration in VIC. Acceptance at handover typically requires the turf to be actively growing with no large bare patches within an agreed establishment period, subject to agreed watering obligations being met.

Also known as: lawn, sod (US term, rarely used in Australia).

Category: Soft landscaping / materials.
