Square-set is a plasterboard ceiling finish where the wall sheet and ceiling sheet meet at a tight 90-degree internal angle with no cornice moulding installed. The junction is set and finished with jointing compound to a Level 5 finish per AS/NZS 2589:2017. The result is a clean, seamless line between wall and ceiling characteristic of contemporary residential design.

Square-set is more labour-intensive than standard cove cornice because it requires a Level 5 finish at the junction and exposes any imperfection in the plasterboard, compound, or paint. It is also more susceptible to cracking on reactive clay sites (Class M, H1, H2) because there is no flexible moulding to absorb minor building movement. Do not tape wall and ceiling sheets together at a square-set junction: taped joints transmit movement as a visible crack.

Also known as: square set, square set ceiling, square-set finish.

Category: Plasterboard finish.
