Shadowline
Shadowline: a reveal or shadow gap at the wall-ceiling junction instead of a cornice moulding. Common in contemporary Australian residential builds.
Ask Chalkline about this →A shadowline is a ceiling finish detail where a small reveal or shadow gap is formed at the internal wall-to-ceiling junction, instead of fitting a cove cornice or finishing to a square-set. The reveal is typically created using a proprietary shadowline bead, a rebated plasterboard edge, or a recessed timber batten. The resulting thin dark line between wall and ceiling gives visual definition without the bulk of a cornice moulding.
Shadowline sits visually between square-set (no shadow or reveal) and cove cornice (a solid moulding). It is forgiving of minor building movement: the shadow gap absorbs small displacements that would crack a hard-set square-set junction. Installation requires careful setting-out and consistent reveal width. It is a common contemporary detail in Australian residential builds.
