QCAT (Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal) is a Queensland state tribunal that resolves building and construction disputes, including those between builders and subcontractors. Subcontractors, contractors, architects, engineers, and building owners can all apply to QCAT. For domestic building disputes there is no monetary cap; for commercial building disputes QCAT’s jurisdiction is limited to $50,000 unless both parties consent in writing to a higher amount (verified 2026-05-10, QCAT, Building disputes).

Before applying to QCAT, parties must first go through the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) dispute resolution process. The QBCC outcome letter is required when filing at QCAT.
