Premises Standards
The Premises Standards (Disability Access to Premises-Buildings 2010) set the access features public buildings must provide under the DDA. AS 1428.1 is the reference.
Ask Chalkline about this →The Premises Standards is the short name for the Disability (Access to Premises-Buildings) Standards 2010, a legislative instrument made under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA). It specifies the access features that public buildings must have so people with a disability can use them on the same basis as people without a disability.
For building practitioners, the Premises Standards contain an Access Code that sets out the technical requirements for new building work and substantial renovations to non-residential buildings. The Access Code references AS 1428.1 for technical compliance: a building that complies with the relevant clauses of AS 1428.1 is taken to comply with the Access Code. From 29 July 2025, the Access Code references AS 1428.1:2021 (the current edition, aligned with NCC 2022 Amendment 2). The Premises Standards apply to Class 1b, 2 (common areas), 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 buildings. Class 1a private dwellings are excluded.
