Brick gauge is the height of one brick course, measured from the bottom of the bed joint to the bottom of the next bed joint above. For a standard clay brick (76mm nominal face height) with a 10mm mortar bed joint, the gauge is 86mm, giving approximately 11.6 courses per metre of wall height.
Consistent gauge is a workmanship standard: bricks set to gauge ensure that window sill and head heights land on full courses, that soldier courses align across wall faces, and that horizontal mortar joints appear level from the street.
