A perpend is the vertical mortar joint between two bricks in the same course. Consistent spacing and clean vertical alignment is one of the workmanship markers inspectors look for at PCI, especially on feature brickwork seen under raking light. The bond pattern decides whether perpends offset by half a brick (stretcher bond) or stack vertically (stack bond).
Also known as: perpend joint, cross joint, header joint.
