AS/NZS 5601 is the joint Australian and New Zealand Standard for gas installations. It sits outside AS/NZS 3500, which explicitly excludes gas, and it is the standard a gasfitter installs and certifies under on residential work.

The standard is published in two parts. AS/NZS 5601.1:2022 (with Amendment 2 published September 2024) covers general gas installations: pipework sizing, appliance connections, ventilation, flueing, isolation, and pressure testing for natural gas and LP gas in buildings. The 2022 edition replaced the 2013 edition on 30 September 2022. AS/NZS 5601.2:2020 covers LP gas installations in caravans and boats for non-propulsive purposes, outside the scope of standard residential work.

State and territory gas safety regulations call AS/NZS 5601.1 up as the mandatory installation standard (for example, the NSW Gas and Electricity (Consumer Safety) Regulation 2018, and the framework administered by Energy Safe Victoria). NCC does not call up AS/NZS 5601 directly; gas is regulated at state level.

All residential gas work requires a licensed gasfitter, audited by the state gas regulator (Energy Safe Victoria, QLD Petroleum and Gas Inspectorate, NSW Fair Trading, and the equivalents in WA, SA, TAS, NT, ACT). The gasfitter issues a gas Certificate of Compliance under AS/NZS 5601.1 on completion. This gas CoC is separate from the plumbing CoC under AS/NZS 3500 and the electrical CoC under AS/NZS 3000. A residential job with all three trades produces three CoCs, all required before occupation.

Also known as: gas installation standard, joint gas standard.
