Scyon: James Hardie's engineered fibre cement range
Scyon is James Hardie's premium engineered fibre cement: Linea weatherboard, Stria cladding, Secura flooring. Different rules from standard 6mm fibre cement.
Ask Chalkline about this →TL;DR
Scyon is James Hardie’s premium engineered fibre cement range, distinct from the standard HardieFlex / Villaboard family. The Scyon family covers cladding (Linea weatherboard, Stria horizontal cladding, Axon vertical cladding, Matrix architectural sheets), flooring (Secura interior, Secura exterior), and decking (HardieDeck). Scyon products use modified fibre cement formulation with higher dimensional stability, more impact resistance, and pre-finished surfaces in some product variants. Different compliance rules from standard fibre cement: fixing schedules, fire ratings, and warranty terms are product-specific. Don’t assume the AS 2908 spec for HardieFlex covers Scyon products; read the manufacturer literature.
What it is
Scyon is a brand family within James Hardie’s Australian product range. Where HardieFlex is the basic smooth fibre cement sheet (4.5 mm and 6 mm thicknesses), Scyon products are engineered fibre cement with:
- Higher density for impact resistance.
- Lower water absorption for dimensional stability.
- Pre-formed profiles (lapped weatherboards, horizontal cladding lines, vertical lines).
- Higher fire ratings in some applications.
- Manufacturer warranties specific to each product line.
The product family launched in 2010 and has progressively replaced older James Hardie premium products (e.g. Linea replaced older Hardiplank).

Grades / variants
The Scyon family is product-specific rather than graded:
- Scyon Linea: lapped weatherboard, 180 mm course. The volume Australian premium-residential cladding.
- Scyon Stria: horizontal channelled cladding, modern look, larger panel.
- Scyon Axon: vertical channelled cladding, modern look.
- Scyon Matrix: large flat panels with expressed joints, architectural look.
- Scyon Secura interior: heavyweight tongue-and-groove flooring for sub-floor applications.
- Scyon Secura exterior: outdoor variant for balconies and terraces.
- HardieDeck: composite decking board (technically Scyon family).
Where to use
- Linea: traditional weatherboard look, contemporary feature walls.
- Stria: modern horizontal-line architecture, often with metal or feature joinery.
- Axon: modern vertical-line architecture, often with mix-and-match products.
- Matrix: high-end architectural facades with expressed joints.
- Secura: heavy-duty flooring substrate, particularly wet areas and external balcony.
- HardieDeck: low-maintenance decking alternative to timber.
Where NOT to use
- Substituting Scyon for HardieFlex: different fixing schedules, different costs. Don’t switch.
- Substituting HardieFlex for Scyon: HardieFlex doesn’t carry Scyon’s premium aesthetic; cheap substitution shows.
- In direct ground contact (without specific Scyon product rated for it): water absorption and chemical attack risk.
- In severe-marine atmosphere beyond the product warranty zone: salt corrosion of internal fibres over time.
Fixing / installation
- Manufacturer-specific fixing schedule for each Scyon product. The fixings, spacings, and edge distances differ from standard fibre cement.
- Pre-priming or pre-painted options: some Scyon products are factory-primed; others are factory-painted in a Colorbond-style finish.
- Tools: a HardieBlade or fibre-cement-specific blade on a wet cutter; never dry-cut.
- Stainless or HDG fixings in coastal and external applications.
Tolerances and acceptance
- Cuts straight, square, no chipping at edges.
- Joints aligned per the architectural drawing.
- Fixing schedule confirmed per manufacturer at the trade-fix point.
Working with other trades
- Chippy: primary installer of Linea, Stria, Axon, Matrix.
- Flooring contractor: Secura interior and exterior.
- Decking contractor: HardieDeck.
- Painter: pre-finished products need careful handling so paint isn’t scuffed at install.
Health & safety
- RCS exposure: cutting any Scyon product generates respirable crystalline silica. Wet cut or on-tool extraction required. P2 respirator at minimum.
- Lift weight: Scyon products are heavier than standard fibre cement. Two-person lift for boards over 2.4 m.
Suppliers
- Direct from James Hardie (the only manufacturer; sold via Bunnings, Mitre 10, trade-only fibre-cement merchants).
- Trade pricing via James Hardie’s trade portal for licensed builders.
What can go wrong
- Wrong fixings: standard nail rather than the manufacturer’s spec’d screw. Joint failure over years.
- Damp storage on site: Scyon products absorb moisture less than HardieFlex but still not zero. Cover and store flat.
- Site-finishing pre-painted boards: trying to repaint a pre-painted Scyon at install doesn’t bond well; product is meant to be installed as factory-supplied.
- Cut edges unsealed: cut ends absorb water; seal with primer before exterior install.
- Hose-down before paint: standard HardieFlex tolerates; Scyon may swell if soaked before final paint.
