A weep hole is an open perpend joint left in the base course of brick veneer cladding (and above openings) to allow moisture that accumulates at the damp-proof course to drain out of the cavity. AS 4773.2:2015 requires weep holes at the base course and above lintels. In standard practice, every third or fourth perpend is left open at these positions.
Blocked weep holes (from mortar snots dropping into the cavity during laying) are one of the most common brickwork defects and the primary cause of moisture ingress at base-course level. They are invisible after brickwork is complete, so the time to check is during the lay.
