Trafficable
Trafficable describes a surface or membrane designed to withstand foot traffic. Used for balconies, roof decks, and podiums requiring durable waterproofing systems.
Ask Chalkline about this →Trafficable describes a surface or waterproofing membrane system that is designed and rated to withstand regular foot traffic. In residential construction, trafficable surfaces include balconies, podiums, external roof decks, and terraces where the waterproofing membrane is exposed to foot traffic either directly or under a paving or decking layer.
Trafficable membranes differ from standard internal wet area membranes in their formulation: they must resist UV degradation, handle thermal movement, and withstand mechanical abrasion from foot traffic without breaching. Using an internal wet area membrane on a trafficable external deck is a specification error that accelerates failure.
The term is also applied to slabs: a “trafficable slab” is one that can carry vehicle or pedestrian loads, as opposed to a ground-bearing slab protected from traffic.
Also known as: trafficable surface, trafficable deck.
