Substrate

Substrate is the base material onto which a finish (tile, paint, membrane, render) is applied. In wet areas, the substrate condition governs membrane performance.

Substrate is the base material or surface onto which a finish layer (tile, membrane, render, paint, or cladding) is applied. Getting the substrate right is prerequisite to any finish performing as specified: the substrate carries the load, provides the bond surface, and must be compatible with the finish system.

In wet areas, the permitted substrates for waterproofing membranes under NCC 2022 Housing Provisions Part 10.2.9 include: concrete (per AS 3600), concrete slabs (per AS 2870), compressed fibre-cement sheet (per AS/NZS 2908.2), water resistant plasterboard, cement render (moisture-treated), and masonry (per AS 3700, moisture-treated). Before any membrane is applied, the substrate must be “clean and dust free” and “free of indentations and imperfections” (NCC 2022 HP 10.2.22). Moisture in the substrate at time of application causes membrane delamination.
