Snots is the site term for mortar droppings that fall into the cavity of a brick veneer wall during bricklaying. As each course is laid, excess mortar squeezed out from bed and perpend joints drops into the cavity. If not cleaned out as the work proceeds, mortar snots accumulate at the base of the wall, blocking weep holes and potentially bridging the damp-proof course (DPC), which allows moisture to track across into the frame.
Checking and cleaning snots is a standard quality expectation during the lay, not after. Once brickwork is complete, the cavity is inaccessible.
