Score-and-snap

A dry, low-dust cutting method for fibre cement sheet and plasterboard. A carbide-tipped scoring tool is run firmly along a straight edge to cut through the surface and partially into the core. The sheet is then snapped sharply over the straight edge, and the backing paper or liner is cut with a utility knife to complete the break.

Score-and-snap generates far less airborne dust than power-saw or angle-grinder cutting, making it the preferred technique on site for straight cuts, particularly when working with fibre cement sheet where respirable crystalline silica (RCS) is a significant hazard.

Also known as: scribing and snapping (less common)
