A layback is the section of kerb and channel that is lowered or flattened to allow vehicles to cross from the road onto a private driveway. It is the transition point between the road pavement and the property’s crossover, and it sits on council-owned land.

Also known as: vehicle crossing (NSW), crossover (VIC, QLD, WA, SA), invert crossing, kerb cut.

Council approval is mandatory before constructing or modifying a layback, regardless of state or territory. The cost and maintenance of the layback fall to the property owner, not the council. Most councils require formwork and final inspections; some specify that only approved contractors may construct the layback itself. On arterial roads in Victoria, referral to VicRoads is also required.
