Irrigation is an automated watering system for garden beds, lawns, and planted areas, typically consisting of a controller, valves, pipes, and pop-up or drip heads. On a residential job, the landscaper designs, supplies, and installs the above-ground distribution network (from the isolation valve outward). Connection to the mains water supply requires a licensed plumber in all Australian states.

Water efficiency and council restrictions may apply in drought-prone regions; confirm any local water authority requirements before specifying an irrigation system. Irrigation is classified as soft landscaping and does not require a structural landscaping contractor licence.

Also known as: reticulation (common in WA), irrigation system.
