Durable notice (termite)

A durable notice is a permanent label, attached at handover, recording the termite barrier system, installer, and date. Required under AS 3660 for new builds.

A durable notice is a permanent, weather-resistant label attached to a new building at handover, recording the termite barrier system installed under and around the slab, the installer’s name and licence, the installation date, and the next inspection date. The notice is mandatory under AS 3660.1:2014 for any termite barrier installation in new construction across Australia, and the NCC Part H1 invokes AS 3660 as the deemed-to-satisfy compliance path.

Where the notice is fixed:

The standard location is inside the electrical meter box (cover or interior wall), which provides:

  • Weather protection (the meter box is sealed against rain).
  • Permanent accessibility (not painted over or removed).
  • Visibility for future inspectors and owners (who check meters periodically).

Alternative locations accepted by AS 3660 (with builder + certifier agreement) include the inside of the electrical switchboard cover or a permanent plaque near the entry.

Material requirements for the notice:

  • Weather-resistant (typically engraved aluminium or laminated plastic).
  • Permanently attached (rivet, screw, or adhesive backing approved for the location).
  • Indelibly marked (engraved or laser-printed, NOT ink-printed paper).

A handwritten or paper-based notice fails AS 3660 compliance.

Why the durable notice matters:

  1. NCC compliance: the certifier’s occupancy certificate / certificate of final inspection depends on AS 3660 compliance, which depends on the durable notice.
  2. Future inspection record: 5, 10, 20 years on, the building owner’s pest controller reads the notice to know what system was installed and what inspection regime applies.
  3. Warranty record: insurance claims under the manufacturer’s termite warranty require the notice to validate the install.
  4. Resale documentation: standard property due diligence pulls the durable notice photo for the building report.

Common builder issues:

  • Notice never installed: PMT walked off after installation, builder never followed up. Discovered at certifier’s final inspection. Easy to fix.
  • Notice details wrong: installer name misspelled, licence number missing, install date wrong. Re-engrave required.
  • Notice fixed to demountable surface: cardboard temporary cover; falls off in 6 months.
  • Notice inside the meter box but covered by another label: notice is overwritten by a service-provider sticker; old notice still there but illegible.

For builders:

  1. Brief the PMT at engagement: notice required, format AS 3660 compliant, location electrical meter box, content per AS 3660.1.
  2. Photograph the notice at handover and store in the client’s handover pack.
  3. Reference the notice in the durable warranty handover documentation (typical residential warranty period: 30 years for the structure, 5-10 years for non-structural).
  4. Check the notice at occupancy inspection to confirm it is in place and legible.
