A design practitioner is registered under the NSW Design and Building Practitioners Act 2020 to prepare regulated designs for Class 2 and other buildings.
Ask Chalkline about this →A design practitioner is a person registered under the Design and Building Practitioners Act 2020 (NSW) to prepare regulated designs for Class 2 residential apartment buildings and other regulated building classes. Design practitioners must issue design compliance declarations confirming their designs comply with the National Construction Code and relevant Australian Standards. A principal design practitioner coordinates all regulated designs for a project and issues a final declaration before construction commences.
Design practitioners (and principal design practitioners) have been required to hold professional indemnity insurance since the Act’s earlier implementation phases, with mandatory PI insurance for registered building practitioners also commencing from 1 July 2026 (verified 2026-05-08, NSW Government).
