Building work supervisor (SA)

Building work supervisor registration (SA): a credential under the Building Work Contractors Act 1995 authorising a person to supervise building work on site.

A building work supervisor registration is a credential issued under the Building Work Contractors Act 1995 (SA) that authorises the holder to carry out or supervise building work on site (verified 2026-05-30, ABLIS: Building Work Supervisor Registration SA). It is separate from the building work contractor’s licence: the contractor’s licence lets a business enter contracts, the supervisor registration lets a person run the work in the field. South Australia is one of the few states that splits the two roles into two credentials rather than combining them.

A sole-trader builder must hold both the contractor’s licence and a supervisor registration; neither works alone for domestic building work. A company must employ at least one registered supervisor whose registration covers the scope of works contracted. For example, a one-person building business applies to CBS for the licence and the supervisor registration at the same time, because a licence with no nominated supervisor cannot lawfully run a site.

CBS issues two registration types: general building work (supervision of the complete building process across all required trades) and specified building work (one or more nominated trades, such as bricklaying or wall and floor tiling). A registration can be limited by building class or height. Registrations run for one year and renew annually. See SA builder licence: CBS classes, qualifications and fees for current fees, the qualification pathways, and the technical interview.

Also known as: BWS registration, registered building work supervisor, CBS supervisor registration.
