APVMA

The APVMA (Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority) is the federal regulator responsible for registering and approving agricultural and veterinary chemicals in Australia, including pesticides and termiticides used in construction. A chemical must be on the APVMA register before it can be used for any registered purpose, including pre-construction termite soil treatment.

Under NCC 2022 ABCB Housing Provisions Part 3.4.2, only chemicals currently on the appropriate authority’s pesticides register (the APVMA register) are permitted in chemical termite management systems for new residential buildings. This requirement is how the NCC keeps pace with chemical cancellations: when the APVMA cancelled all residential chlorpyrifos uses in 2019, that product immediately became non-compliant for new construction termite treatment regardless of what was stated in older building specifications.
