The ACCS (Australian Carpet Classification Scheme) is the national independent grading scheme for carpet sold in Australia. It rates residential carpets from 1 to 6 stars based on appearance retention and durability testing carried out by NATA-accredited laboratories, with 6 stars indicating the highest durability (verified 2026-05-10, Carpet Institute of Australia).

The scheme covers all fibre types and all carpet constructions. The overriding classification criterion is appearance retention: how well the carpet holds its look and pile structure under traffic. Grading is administered by the Carpet Institute of Australia and assessed by an independent expert panel.

For residential new builds, a minimum 3-star rating is the typical starting point for bedrooms; 5 to 6 stars is recommended for hallways and stairs. The ACCS rating should be specified in the contract schedule so the client-selected carpet meets the agreed performance standard.
